Answers before you commit.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. If you do not see yours, a consultation is free.

Getting started
How do I know if I qualify for tax relief?

If you have an unpaid balance, unfiled years, or active collection at the federal or state level, you likely have options. A consultation confirms which programs fit before any work begins.

What happens on the first call?

We listen, review your situation, and explain your realistic options. There is no obligation and no pressure, and you leave knowing where you stand.

Do you handle state taxes as well as the IRS?

Yes. We represent clients before the IRS and state agencies, including the California Franchise Tax Board and CDTFA, and coordinate federal and state matters together.

How quickly can you help?

For urgent matters like a wage garnishment or a final levy notice, we act immediately, often the same day, once we represent you. For everything else, we start with a prompt consultation.

Working with us
Do I still have to deal with the IRS myself?

No. Our Enrolled Agents are authorized to represent you, so notices and calls come to us rather than to you.

What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent is a tax professional federally licensed to represent taxpayers before the IRS at every level. It is the highest credential the IRS awards. See your tax team.

Will the same team handle my case throughout?

Yes. One dedicated team stays with your matter from the first call to the final agreement, so nothing is lost in a handoff.

Is Rockwater a law firm?

No. We are a tax-resolution firm staffed by Enrolled Agents. For matters that require an attorney, we will tell you.

Programs & outcomes
Can you settle my debt for less than I owe?

Sometimes. If you qualify for an offer in compromise or penalty relief, the balance can be reduced. We assess eligibility honestly before you commit. See offer in compromise.

Can you really stop a garnishment?

Once we represent you, we work directly with the taxing authority to seek a release or a manageable agreement in place of the garnishment or levy. See wage garnishments.

What if I have unfiled returns?

Filing accurate returns is usually the first step, and we handle it as part of the case. It is what unlocks nearly every resolution. See unfiled returns.

How long does the IRS have to collect?

Generally ten years from assessment, though certain events pause and extend that clock. We review your transcripts to confirm where each year stands.

Fees & next steps
What does it cost to work with Rockwater?

Your fee depends on the complexity of your case. You receive a clear quote in writing after the free consultation, with no obligation to move forward.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. The first conversation is free and confidential, and there is no obligation. You leave understanding your options either way.

What do you need from me to start?

Just the basics of your situation and any notices you have received. If you engage us, we obtain your full IRS and state records as part of the work.
